The construction of offshore wind turbines is a relatively new industry, requiring global procurement of infrastructure (such as wind turbine generators), much of which is not manufactured locally to the Moray Firth, or indeed to Britain.
Offshore wind is a new industry; it therefore requires a new supply chain in order to deploy projects. This offers opportunities to existing companies which could undertake the activities and provide the services necessary for project deployment.
Significant economic opportunities will, however, be created in terms of construction and installation of many stages of the project. In order to enable local, Scottish and UK companies to take best advantage of the opportunities which offshore wind construction and operation can bring we have engaged from the outset with the local authorities and agencies responsible for the economic development around the Moray Firth (including Highland Council, Aberdeenshire Council, Moray Council, Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise) as well as the UK and Scottish Governments.
Since commencing development work in 2010, we have worked with Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Enterprise and local authorities to engage with existing enterprises both local to the Moray Firth and nationally in order to raise awareness of the new markets which will be created as a result of project deployment.
A number of different supply chain events have been held at various strategic points in the development of the projects in order to inform local enterprises how they can become involved in the offshore wind supply chain. The events have been attended by hundreds of local enterprises, and have allowed us to introduce and to introduce local companies to some of our potential ‘Tier 1’ contractors (see the Moray East Contracting Strategy).
By adding your company’s details to our supply chain register, we can advise you of our ongoing programme of supply chain events which are held across the Moray Firth at strategic points in project development. The register also enables us to share details of enterprises which have indicated an interest in the Moray Offshore wind projects with our ‘Tier 1’ suppliers to enable them to have ready access to local company details.
